THIS year Joburg marks a significant milestone in turning 125 years. The City of Johannesburg is viewed by the public, residents, media and various stakeholders as being a representation of what Joburg stands for. As such, this milestone presents to the City an opportunity to market, profile and significantly position itself, its leadership, its brand and service delivery milestones.
Background
Johannesburg as a city was founded in 1886, when gold was discovered in the area. Today, it is the economic and industrial centre of South Africa.
Johannesburg belongs to all of us. This celebration is about us – the people that live in Joburg, visit Joburg and work in Joburg.
In commemorating, celebrating and recognizing this significant milestone, the City of Johannesburg will create the ‘Joburg 125-year Experience Centre’. The centre will provide a platform for visitors to interact, view, learn about and experience Joburg in the 1880s, in the 20th century and the Joburg 2040 vision.
The exhibition centre will be built at Museum Africa and launched on 19 November 2011. It will capture the rich history of Johannesburg, from the arts, fashion and music, to infrastructure, corporates and SMMEs operating within Johannesburg.

Launch celebration
Johannesburg is celebrating 125 years since it was founded in 1886. Together, let’s celebrate the monumental growth that our city has achieved, transforming it into a thriving metropolis.
The City of Johannesburg and its partners will host a live music concert which will take audiences on a historical journey of the past 125 years through musical expression – it will be about the sights, sounds, fashions, cars, people and experiences of Joburg.
Joburgers will be reliving the experiences of our forbearers while feeling the beat of a modern city on the move. Large screens will bring alive a city at work over 125 years – its sounds, its people, its sights, its struggles and its victories.
