The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of the City of Johannesburg, is implementing the transformation and upgrading of the Brixton Social Cluster from its previously underdeveloped and deteriorating state, to a vibrant and sustainable social cluster that will offer a range of uses and choices for people who live, work and play in the area.

Once construction is complete, the Social Cluster will consist of a new multi-purpose sports and recreation centre, with upgraded sports fields catering to netball and basketball, tennis courts, a public square, a new library and coffee shop, an upgraded swimming pool complex, a green open space and kids play area.

The Brixton Social Cluster, which is currently at 63.7% construction progress, will significantly improve the lives of residents of Brixton, and of the surrounding neighborhoods, by creating jobs, promoting active lifestyles, and providing opportunities for social interaction among communities.

The project has created employment opportunities for the community, and in particular the youth, to alleviate unemployment in the community. To date, 10 SMMEs and 50 local labourers have been employed and are receiving continuous training and development through the project.

The Social Cluster’s construction budget is estimated at R130 million with upgrades implemented in phases. Member of Mayoral Committee for Development Planning, Cllr Reuben Masango says, “One of the Mayoral Priorities is to promote economic development and achieve economic growth that reduces unemployment, inequality and poverty. As the City we are proud of these projects that create employment and opportunities for our residents”.
