#JoziWalks, a Co-production Success

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) annually conducts various project and area-based impact or baseline assessments on the impact its infrastructure developments. In order to meet local needs and mitigate challenges the JDA is increasingly encouraging the co-production of solutions in partnership with local communities and stakeholders. This is an essential component of development intervention in cities.

The second #JoziWalks weekend was held on May 19-20, 2018. Close to 600 Joburgers took part in walks across 11 neighbourhoods, on foot, by bike and even by skateboard.

Now in its second year, #JoziWalks, which is a series of JDA sponsored walks hosted by community champions over one weekend, creates a space for Joburg residents to explore neighbourhoods they might not otherwise visit and sparks and fosters conversation and reflections on what makes neighbourhoods work. The project recognises community champions and initiatives, amplifies their efforts, and creates models for active citizenry.

#JoziWalks targets places where the JDA has a development presence or focus in order to:

- Celebrate the real Joburg – places and people - and the spirit of the city
- Foster community connection
- Gather insights into what makes a neighbourhoods
