Merafe Railway Station upgrades construction commencing

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) on behalf of the City of Johannesburg has appointed contractor Boitshoko Construction Road & Surfacing (Pty) Ltd to commence with the construction stage of the first phase of Merafe Railway Station project. The Railway Station upgrade will commence in May 2018 and will be completed in October 2019. The project is expected to employ six SMME’s and utilise local labourers.

The project is part of the COJ Transport’s initiative to improve Public Transport Facilities City-wide. The main objective of this project is to upgrade pedestrian walkways connecting to all Metrorail Stations in Soweto in order to improve pedestrian mobility to allow for safer movement between different amenities and integration with the public transport facilities. The upgrade will also include street lighting upgrades and services upgrades where required.

Scope of work will also include drainage, sidewalks, kerbs and paving, street lighting, landscaping. The project will be phased based on budget availability

Stakeholder consultation process has been completed. Some of the key external stakeholders affected by this project include but not limited to the, JRA, City of Johannesburg Department of Environmental Management, City of Johannesburg Development Planning, affected communities (residents and businesses), Regional Office, Ward Councillor, local Emerging contractors and Business Forums etc.

The upgrade of the railway station will co-produce solutions to meet local needs and mitigate movements’ challenges of the pro poor communities in Soweto.

The cost for the construction of the upgrading of Merafe Railway Station project is R26m said, Botes, the JDA CEO.
